Researcher Profiles
Venkatesh Rao
Research Associate, Leading Edge Forum

Venkatesh Rao, based in the US, is a Research Associate for the Leading Edge Forum, and is the author of our March 2013 report entitled, Putting the 'I' Back into IT:  Future Data Strategies, Big and Small.

Since March 2011, Venkatesh has been an independent researcher, writer and consultant. Prior to that, between 2006 and early 2011, he was a senior researcher and Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the Xerox Innovation Group, where he led two web product launches, and led or participated in several successful technology adoption and organizational change initiatives.

From 2004 to 2006, he worked on AFOSR (Air Force) sponsored research in command and control of semi-autonomous vehicle systems.  He also developed and taught an advanced graduate course on complex engineering systems devoted to integration of AI, OR and control-theoretic techniques.

In September 2000, Venkatesh was the first employee at Sulekha.com – a pioneering online community that has since grown into one of the largest online communities for Indians worldwide – where his primary role was helping the founders grow the company from a small home-based startup operation to a successful revenue-generating company.

He also helped systematize and scale the core online publishing operations, and led the development of an offline publishing operation which resulted in the publication of the first of what is now a series of books published by Sulekha in collaboration with Penguin.

Venkatesh is the author of Tempo: timing, tactics and strategy in narrative-driven decision-making, and the author of ribbonfarm.com – a widely-read blog on organizations, culture, technology and the changing landscape of work.

He earned a PhD in systems and control theory in 2003 from the University of Michigan and subsequently spent several years as a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell University working on next-generation command and control systems for the US Air Force.
