The Future of Retained IT – Repositioned at the Front of the Firm

We began this project with the quest to understand how, in an era of both increased sourcing and new technology proliferation, Enterprise IT organizations are deciding what skills they should and shouldn’t retain in-house. 

But as our research progressed, we realized that this question was inextricably tied to the larger issue of the future mission of Enterprise IT.  We also observed that, while this mission is clearly changing, the nature of the changes was not particularly well understood or articulated. We therefore sought first, to understand and explain how the purpose of Enterprise IT is likely to change over the coming years, and second, what these changes mean to the skills, competencies and cultures that firms need to retain and develop. The opportunities in information technology have never been greater, but only for those organizations that embrace a much more front-of-the-firm future.
